Nearly 21% of San Diegans choose cremation these days, which has led to more business for those who specialize in scattering ashes. One San Diego couple earns a living scattering ashes in the sea. Ken Shortridge and his wife Anya own 'Ashes on the Sea.' They provide service to any family wishing to scatter a loved one's remains at sea. Everything from the boat to get out to sea to the latitude and longitude where the remains were released are part of the service Ken and Anya provide. They've got a wide range of boats that range from small dive boats to a 100 foot yacht. And, it was Ken's love of boats that got them started in this business. When Ken's father passed away, he decided to scatter his father's ashes at sea, in accordance with what he thought his dad would have wished. "That's what got me thinking what do people do who don't have someone living by the ocean? That's where I started the business 'Ashes on the Sea," says Ken. In three years, they've received ashes from around the world. And so, is it really any surprise that the wish they grant others is also their own. — Corrie Vaus, reporter, Channel 4 San Diego |
