Do you need a California Burial Permit?

Purchasing your California VS-9
Burial Permit

Back to Permits
If you need a California burial permit - VS-9 - for the scattering of ashes of your loved one, you are in the right place.

We can obtain your permit for any coastal California County, including San Diego, Orange, Los Angeles, Ventura, Monterey, San Francisco and others.

Please allow 2 weeks for the permitting process. If you need a permit sooner, please call the office at 877-277-2799.

In order to procure your permit, you will need to mail an original death certificate or transit permit to:

Ashes on the Sea
P.O. Box 710693
San Diego CA 92171

We will mail this back to you.

Do not send a photocopy, even if it is in full color. The County WILL NOT accept photocopies, and this will delay the processing of your permit.

Exceptions: If your State has an EDRS system and E-files everything, we can accept an e-filed document sent to our office email: [email protected]

If you have any questions regarding document validity, you may scan or take a photo of any document in questions and we can let you know if it will be sufficient.

Please include with the death certificate:
  • Your name
  • Your relationship to the deceased
  • The County where you will be scattering the ashes, or a portion thereof
  • and the date the permit is needed by
  • a check for $69 (call the office for credit card payments)
